Selecting Plastic and Composite Materials
Five Steps to Success
For those that are less familiar with plastics and composite materials, it can be somewhat challenging to know how to get started in the material selection process. Engineering courses usually cover metals and other standard materials extensively in mechanics of materials courses, yet not much attention is given to plastics and composite materials. The purpose of this technical bulletin is to provide extra tips specific to plastics and composites that can be useful when selecting a material for a particular application.
The five steps for material selection include:
1) Understanding the Requirements
2) Research Options & Match Properties
3) Cost Analysis
4) Testing & Prototyping
5) Final Material Specification & Selection
