PolyPro FR® Cable Tray Liners​

We manufacture cable tray liners from PolyPro FR®, our UL-listed flame-retardant polypropylene material built for electrical and thermal insulation inside power system equipment. In data centers and telecommunications facilities, we supply these liners to line the inside of cable trays so that fiber, copper, and power cables run cleanly through the tray without snagging on tray rails, welds, or rough edges. Because we produce PolyPro FR® ourselves in the United States, we can supply cable tray liners in the widths, thicknesses, and colors that match your existing tray system rather than asking you to adapt your installation to a stock size.

HOW OUR CABLE TRAY LINERS IMPROVE CABLE MANAGEMENT

A bare cable tray has exposed rails, welded joints, and edges that catch cable jacketing during pulls and future moves, adds, and changes. Our cable tray liners cover that surface with a smooth polypropylene layer, which reduces the chance of nicking a jacket during installation and keeps cables from tangling with each other as more runs are added over time. They also cover the open view into the tray, so a rack row or overhead run looks finished instead of exposing a mass of cabling to anyone walking the aisle. Installation is straightforward: our liners are cut to fit standard tray widths and lay into the tray without requiring special tools or hardware.

PROPERTIES BEHIND OUR CABLE TRAY LINERS

The reason PolyPro FR® works for this application comes down to three properties we build into the material at extrusion: flame retardance, dielectric performance, and resistance to the moisture and chemicals found in a data center or telecom equipment room.

FLAME RETARDANT RATING

PolyPro FR® is UL listed under file E228440 and carries a UL 94 V-0 rating across the full thickness range we produce, 0.005 inches to 0.125 inches. That rating matters directly for cable tray liners because the material sits alongside live cabling for the life of the installation, so it needs to self-extinguish rather than sustain a flame if an electrical fault occurs nearby.

DIELECTRIC STRENGTH & MOISTURE RESISTANCE

PolyPro FR® has strong dielectric breakdown strength, which gives you a layer of electrical insulation between cables and the metal tray itself. It also has very low water absorption, so the liner will not swell, warp, or lose its insulating properties in a mechanical room or facility with fluctuating humidity.

TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE

Per UL testing, PolyPro FR® holds up to 110°C. Cable trays running above racks or near power distribution equipment can see elevated ambient heat, and the liner needs to hold its shape and insulating properties at those temperatures rather than becoming brittle or deforming.

FABRICATION OPTIONS FOR CABLE TRAY LINERS

We supply PolyPro FR® cable tray liners as roll stock, cut sheet, or fully fabricated parts sized to your tray, in black or white. Every thickness we produce is available in a 48 inch width, which lets your fabricator nest liner pieces more efficiently and cut down on scrap compared to narrower stock. If your tray uses a nonstandard width, a radius, or a run of tees and crosses, we can die cut, laser cut, water jet cut, or CNC machine the liner to match, and we can heat form or thermoform it where the tray geometry calls for a shaped piece rather than a flat sheet. Additional thicknesses and colors beyond our standard offering are available on request.

Cable tray liners are one piece of the airflow management work we support in data centers. We also produce PolyPro FR® blanking panels, which close off empty rack space so cold air stays where it is supposed to instead of recirculating with exhaust air, and PolyPro FR® air baffles, which direct airflow around rack rows and prevent it from leaking into unmanaged space. Facilities that use all three, tray liners for cable pathways, blanking panels for open rack units, and air baffles for directing airflow, get a tighter overall airflow management setup than addressing cable management alone.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

No. A cable tray cover sits on top of the tray and closes it off from above, usually to keep out dust or prevent accidental contact with cables from outside the tray. A cable tray liner sits inside the tray, along the bottom and sides, to protect the cables themselves from the tray structure. We supply liners rather than covers, since our focus with PolyPro FR® in this application is protecting cable jacketing and providing dielectric separation from the tray.

Because we cut PolyPro FR® to size rather than selling a single fixed profile, we can fabricate liners for wire basket trays, ladder trays, and solid bottom trays. The fabrication method changes based on the tray type. A solid bottom tray typically takes a flat cut sheet, while a wire basket or ladder tray may need the liner heat formed or cut with tabs so it seats correctly against the rails instead of sagging between them.

The liner itself is not a load-bearing component and does not change the tray’s structural fill rating, which is set by the tray manufacturer based on the tray’s construction. Our role is supplying an insulating, flame-retardant layer inside the tray. Any fill calculations and code compliance for the cable tray installation remain governed by the tray manufacturer’s ratings and the applicable NEC requirements for your project.

We supply PolyPro FR® as roll stock or cut sheet if your team or installer plans to cut liners on site, or as fully fabricated parts cut to your tray dimensions if you send us a tray schedule or drawing. Fabricated parts are the more common order for larger installations since it removes on-site cutting from the installation timeline.

Order quantities depend on the thickness, color, and fabrication method requested, since die cutting a run of liners has different setup requirements than shipping cut roll stock.
