Generator Applications
The Gund Company is a manufacturer and fabricator of engineered material solutions for power generation equipment, including steam, hydro, and wind generators. In generators, the insulation components are specific to their application and location within the generator. Standard generator components are:
- Rotor Field: The rotor is the moving component of the generator that provides the magnetic field. Its rotation is provided by the prime mover (turbine, water, the wind, motor, engine, etc.).
- Stators: The stator is the stationary part of a generator system. The stator provides power output and keeps the magnetic field (rotor) aligned.
- Exciters: In general terms, the generator rotor is a rotating electromagnet that requires direct current (DC) to excite the magnetic field. The exciter produces this DC voltage.
- Accessories and Auxiliary Components: Many generator accessories and auxiliaries require insulation components designed to be a perfect fit. They also require specialty (Auxiliary) tools, such as rotor stands, rotor coupling shoes, and temporary blocking to install the generator insulation components.
Electric Motor Applications

- Rotors: The rotor is the moving component of the electromagnetic system in the electric motor. Its rotation is due to the interaction between the stator windings and the magnetic fields, which produce torque around the rotor’s axis and mechanical power to the shaft.
- Stators: The stator is the stationary part of a rotary system and utilizes the incoming power to apply electromotive forces to move the rotor.
Transformer Applications
Transformers (generally) fall into two categories, dry-type transformers and liquid or oil-filled transformers. Even though the primary components are similar between dry and oil-filled transformers (core, coil, leads, etc.), the insulation can be quite different. Dry-type transformers utilize safety-certified CSA and UL-recognized high-temperature insulation systems, while oil-filled transformers use oil and high dielectric strength wood based insulation materials.
